Making things better is the new standard

You're not Jesus because you said "well done" in a meeting

Ahoy,

Before we dive into today’s topic I want to do a quick check in to make sure I’m still pushing out the kind of content you want to see, and I want to get a feel for some potential future content.

I’d appreciate you taking the time to answer the questions below. If you think you can provide any additional information please do. After you select an option it’ll open a box for you to add something to your answer.

Silent leadership has, is and will always be free.

But it still takes a lot of effort to keep this running, which I’m 100% okay with as long as I know I’m giving you the content you actually want to see and that actually helps!

Like I said last week, I appreciate your support and I cant wait to start putting more out.

Is Silent Leadership helping you become a better leader?

Are you getting the resources, the ideas, the guidance you need to improve your leadership? Or do you need something else? It would be a huge help if you could expand on your answer! Thanks very much.

What course would be most suitable to you?

To be clear, these courses don't exist. I just want to get a feel for the kind of information you feel you would benefit most from. Thank you again for any further information you can add.

Doing the things that make things better for the team isn’t going above and beyond, it’s the standard as a leader.

I hear stories of leaders getting this wrong all too often.

They do something little for a member of the team and expect that person to become a devoted disciple, like saying “well done” to them was as impactful as turning water into wine.

If you think that small act is worthy of recognition as a leader, you’ve got the whole idea wrong.

What I really want to do today is cement this idea in your mind.

The point of being a leader is to look after your people. In return they look after you. The ironic part is, if you look after them with the intention of having them look after you, they will see straight through that and that can make things worse.

This is where the answer comes from to a question I’ve received fairly often.

Quite a few of the lessons, tips etc. that I share are based on the first principle of leadership:

“Getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.”

Sometimes this raises the question:

“So you’re manipulating people into doing what you want…”

And I completely see where that question is coming from. However, “manipulation” has a lot of negative connotations. And when you’re helping people purely so they help you, I can see how someone could make that accusation.

That is why for me, leadership is about truly putting the team first.

It comes from a place of genuine care for other people.

When you lead in a way that shows true compassion and care for the team it’s hard to put that manipulation label on it.

It also means that the team will start to look out for you as well.

Like trying to sleep, the harder you try the further away sleep is. The more you try to get your team to look out for you, the less likely you’ll be to build that connection.

If you just let go and relax, you fall asleep faster. If you just look out for people because that’s just the best way to be, you’ll find you build better connections and a stronger team.

So I’ll bring it back to the first line:

Doing the things that make things better for the team isn’t going above and beyond, it’s the standard as a leader.

Just something short to keep in mind as you go through the week.

As always, have a great day.

Reece
