I wish this was the only problem I had as a leader... The Friday Deep Dive

When things go wrong, it’s on you. When things go well, it’s thanks to the team.

Ahoy,

Welcome back to another Friday deep dive!

I always talk about dealing with problems. What to do when things don’t go your way. Or how improve certain things.

But sometime, things genuinely do go your way!

Crazy right, I know!

But regardless of what is happening, there is always something that we as leaders need to do.

In this case, it’s ensuring our people get their much deserved recognition.

Here’s a quick review of this week’s scenario in case you missed it.

Your team has successfully completed a major project ahead of schedule and under budget. Everyone performed well and there can be no doubt this project was delivered above expectations. However, upper management seems unaware of this achievement.

  1. How would you effectively communicate your team's success to upper management?

  2. What strategies can you employ to ensure your team receives appropriate recognition for their hard work?

  3. How can you leverage this success to advocate for additional resources or opportunities for your team?

There is this idea of a virtuous idea of someone shouldn’t need acknowledgement for them to work hard.

Now that is great for those people.

But the average person wants their hard work to be recognised.

Recognising people’s hard work is one of the greatest way to maintain moral and motivation in the team.

Doesn’t it feel nice when people say “good work”?

Now I want to make sure you recognise the distinction here between going out to get recognition for your own hard work and going out to get the team recognition for their hard work.

Remember, when things go wrong, you take responsibility, when things go right it is thanks to the hard work of the team.
